The Native Story
Like many good projects, Native Scientists started with a chat in a pub. It was in London, in 2012, that Joana Moscoso and Tatiana Correia realised they could do something about the educational challenges faced by some of the lowest achievers in school. They could create opportunities for children to interact with scientists in a way that was relatable and meaningful for them.
Native Scientists was founded a year later, in 2013, by these two women in science with the goal of connecting children and scientists in underserved communities across Europe to reduce inequalities, promote quality education and celebrate diversity.
Later in 2020, Joana Moscoso relocated back to Portugal and met Joana Bordalo. Due to their common wish to give back to their home country, they expanded Native Scientists to Portugal, creating a national educational programme, that counted also with the participation of researcher Matilde Gonçalves.
Today, Native Scientists counts on a network of over 3,000 scientists and our educational programmes have established over 45,000 interactions between children and scientists.
