As a new school year begins, Native Scientists launches another edition of its Internship Programme.

Native’s mission is made possible through the work of scientists and the support from our partners, but also by the time and commitment of many who work behind the curtains. In collaboration with Fundação da Juventude, we opened the doors to a new cohort of interns for the 2nd edition of our Internship Programme. Managers within our Programme, Partnerships, Impact, and Communications departments were the roles filled by the new 13 interns.

This programme’s goal is to help young people grow professionally, enabling participants to develop their skills and gain experience, while advancing Native’s work in broadening children’s horizons through science education. It is designed to offer personalized support, training and mentorship throughout the 2026/2027 school year, and provides the new managers with hands-on experiences and networking opportunities.

The programme began on September 8 with the onboarding and welcome session for the new professionals. Hosted in a space kindly provided by our partner Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento (FLAD), the event brought together team members and newcomers to discuss what they hoped to get out of the year ahead.

Through a team building exercise, the new professionals stated their hopes for their internship and the starting school year. While some hope to break out of their comfort zone and reinvent themselves through the experience, others seek to become more assertive communicators and hone their critical and analytical skills. They all have the desire to learn from the professionals around them, to inspire and be inspired, and to pick up soft skills and tools which will help them not only at Native Scientists but in life as well. Many are also looking forward to understanding, from the inside, how a non-profit truly runs. Whatever shape their year takes, they share the common goal to grow professionally while helping Native Scientists grow too. The event also gave the new managers a first taste of Native's work and mission.

We welcome them on board and look forward to supporting their growth at Native Scientists.
